Code Earth - Horizons 2008

Code Earth… Monumental Installation for Le Puy de la Tâche in Chambon-sur-Lac by Emmanuel Cartillier

Emmanuel Cartillier is a french artist born in Dijon in 1967.

For him, creating is a very personal way of expressing an uncomfortable living situation in a society that is deaf and blind to world suffering ; Land Art exprim him.

The Code Earth (Code Terre in french) installation shows the earth as, a consumer product just like any other, on which the only thing missing is a barcode scaled to size (magnified 2000 times).

Placed on a slope of the Puy de la Tâche, its straight lines evoke the toil of the earth : the labour preceding all harvests and the geological history of le Puy with its cooled down black lava streams.

However, optimism wins over as displayed in the form of a telephone number under the code, a path to the words of 1st grade pupils from Chambon-sur-Lac on our relations with the land.

Horizons - Art Nature Encounters

Horizons - Art Nature encounters - Massif du Sancy - from 1st July to 15 September 2008

pancarte

This summer, for its second edition and for the the joy of all, art and hiking lovers in search of discovery, the Horizons - "Art Nature" Encounters unique contemporary art event blends the beauty of landscapes with artistic creation all in ecological approach. Ten artists of different nationalities have thus been selected to create ten monumental works at ten natural sites of my area.

This year, young talent is being highlighted, with the notable presence of two women who excel in the realm of creativity, Laetitia Carlotti and Cornelia Conrads. Female are everywhere ;-)

Each work designed to the scale of the landscape, is a true invitation to opening up to the world of nature that surrounds us. Volcano summits, crater lakes, winding rivers, fields and forests etc. at 10 emblematic sites of the Massif du Sancy, some hardly known, will stage such ephemeral creations. The many natural or original materials used to offer the cleverest creations and see them blossom, ever so unique and aesthetic, on all sites.

As part as an ecological approach, the works made for Horizons use environment-friendly materials so as to preserve the sites, most of which benefit from environmental protection measures. Work upstream has thus been conducted for the installation of the works in the Regional Natural Park of the Auvergne Volcanoes.

I will then lead you to the discovery of all these sites and creations… with photos of course !!

Berenice Abbott

Berenice Abbott (July 17, 1898 – December 9, 1991).

Born Bernice Abbott, she was an American photographer best known for her black-and-white photography of New York City architecture and urban design of the 1930s.

This photo is from Man Ray (Emmanuel Rudzitsky). Credit Mariana.

Berenice Abbot said :

Photography helps people to see.

Some people are still unaware that reality contains unparalleled beauties. The fantastic and unexpected, the ever-changing and renewing is nowhere so exemplified as in real life itself.

Photography can never grow up if it imitates some other medium. It has to walk alone; it has to be itself.

I took to photography like a duck to water. I never wanted to do anything else. Excitement about the subject is the voltage which pushes me over the mountain of drudgery necessary to produce the final photograph.

I am so fascinated with this century it will help keep me alive. I’ll be there until the last minute, fighting.
